Altos adventure windmill11/6/2023 ![]() There are towns around where you can pick up some pastel de nata and maybe find some live music or trails all through the hills into the mountains. A visit to the mountain village of Belver, with its 12th century castle towering over the valley is like going back in time, the prehistory museum even more so. A picnic by the waterfall on a hot summer afternoon feels like you’ve washed up on a desert island and there are also river beaches all along the nearby banks of the Tejo. A few minutes down the hill is a fantastic wild swimming spot on the river. Part of the mill’s appeal is the chance to do absolutely nothing somewhere incredibly beautiful, but there is plenty to keep you busy, especially if you’re up for an adventure. ![]() Twenty yards down the hill is Simon and Fiona’s house, but you’ll barely see them unless you head down to get the delicious benefit of Simon’s expertise in natural wine in informative and intoxicating tasting sessions. There’s a big fireplace with comfy chairs for any chilly nights and a table outside for al fresco meals with the most incredible views of the hills. You’ll find the original mill machinery upstairs in the bedroom, a desk made from an old millstone, the sink in the bathroom made from a stone chicken bath and the shower from a cow trough. The transformation has been gentle and drawn on the local area, often very directly. With their passion and energy they have turned it into a unique and charming space that celebrates its heritage and welcomes you to its spectacular piece of countryside. When owners Simon and Fiona found it, recent restoration by a local had saved it from crumbling away. In the hills of central Portugal, an hour and a half north and east from Lisbon, is a windmill on a quiet hillside.
